Studies of many animal
species also suggest that
constancy is not a matter of
reason but of perception. In
experiments on size
perception, the animal subject
typically is first trained to
discriminate between two
objects equally far away on the
basis of their different sizes.
For example, the animal learns
that choosing the larger object
is always rewarded. Then, in
the critical test, the larger
object is placed farther away, so
that its visual angle is now
smaller than the visual angle of
the smaller object. If the
animalΓÇÖs perception of size is
governed by visual angle, it
should go to the nearer object.
But if its size perception is
similar to ours and it perceives
the more distant object to be
larger, the animal should
continue going to it. In all
species testedΓÇöΓÇôincluding
primates, other mammals,
chickens, and fishΓÇöΓÇôsize
constancy prevails.
